Science and research

The Melanchthon House is home to an extensive specialised academic library on the work and influence of Philipp Melanchthon. The European Melanchthon Academy is dedicated to the academic cataloguing and research of these holdings. With publications, conferences and forums, it inspires international Melanchthon research and thus contributes to a new, multifaceted image of the Bretten reformer, making him appear as an independent and powerful personality alongside Martin Luther. The key questions of the Melanchthon Academy's research programme are:

  • The person and work of Philipp Melanchthon;
  • Melanchthon's significance in the history of the Reformation;
  • Melanchthon as an "ecumenist of the Reformation" (Melanchthon's significance for inner-Protestant ecumenism and the dialogue with Rome in the past and present);
  • Melanchthon's relationship to Islam and Judaism;
  • Melanchthon and the humanist movement of his time;
  • Melanchthon's universal scholarship (theology, philosophy, natural philosophy, natural science, mathematics, astronomy, astrology, history, medicine, psychology, and ancient poetry);
  • the European impact of Melanchthon.
